Berkeley Chess School
Chess is fun, and can be learned quickly and easily!
Studies have found that chess improves test results in reading, science, and math, and produces growth in critical cognitive skills. Beyond academia, chess influences social behavior including self esteem, respect for others, patience, and good sportsmanship.
Boards and sets are provided for our classes, which include a combination of instruction and supervised play.
The Berkeley Chess School is a nonprofit organization offering chess instruction from kindergarten through high school since 1982. We are an affiliate of the US Chess Federation. Over the years our students have won many state championships and several have gone on to become National Masters, FIDE Masters, and International Masters. For further information, please call us at (510) 843-0150, email us at programs@berkeleychessschool.org, or visit our website at www.berkeleychessschool.org.

Martial Arts
Tibetan White Crane Gong-fu
According to David Moore's Sifu (martial arts teacher) since 1996, John Cole, the origin of Tibetan White Crane Gong-fu ("skill acquired through repetition") began when a monk's meditation was disturbed by a battle between a white crane and a white ape. Thus began a fighting style that emulates the evasive movements of the Crane, and the powerful movements of the Ape.
The White Crane Style emphasizes powerful exertion of force, firm footwork, clear rhythm and the domination of arm movements. All movements strive to be clean, quick and graceful.

In a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, you will get to know your neighbors and learn about each other’s cultures, all while exposing the little ones to lots of language and music. Adults are expected to participate along with their kids, and no prior experience is necessary. In our weekly gatherings we sing songs in many languages-- primarily in English, but also in Mandarin, Spanish, Hebrew, Russian, Korean, German, etc. We play musical games, sing canons, and learn lullabies.
